Buenos días!
Marina Sitrin, neustro hijo Camilo y yo acabamos regresar de un tour de conferencias por EEUU y Canadá. Fuimos dando conferencias y debates sobre los "nuevos movimientos" con nuestro último libro "They Can't Represent Us!: Reinventing Democracy from Greece to Occupy". (no nos representan: reinventando la democracia de Grecia a Occupy). Hemos ido visitando muchos lugares, entre otros una serie de ciudades medianas en Carolina del Norte. Ha sido muy interesante ver como después de Occupy se han formado estructuras y grupos de izquierda en todos lados. Cooperaciones han sido fortalecidas y se han formado movimientos activos a nivel local que impiden desalojos, se manifiestan en contra de la policía, forman cooperativas... Las conferencias han tenido buena asistencia y se dieron debates bien interesantes!

Oliver Ressler y yo hemos terminado un documental de 34 min. sobre la fábrica recuperada RiMaflow en Milán, Italia. Ya ha sido presentado a partir del 24 de sep. en la famosa Secession de Viena, Austria (ver puntos 2).

Sobre la cuestión de las fábricas recuperadas en el hemisferio norte publiqué un artículo en la revista académica brasileira Org & Demo (el artícuo está en castellano). Véase punto 5.

Mietras tanto la situación en Venezuela no es nada facil. Se ha logrado - por ahora - parar la movilización violenta de derrecha en las calles. Sin embargo el 1 de octubre el diputato del PSUV en la Asamblea Nacional Robert Serra y su compañera Maria Herrera fueron asesinados brutalmente en su casa en Caracas. Al parecer su muerte fue encargada de parte de narcos y paramilitares colombianos. Serra era considerado pertenecer a una ala más radical entre los parlamentarios y era cercano a algunos colectivos de las zonas populares de Caracas.
Pocos días después del asesinato de Serra la policía CIPC asaltó un edificio del grupo Colectivo Revolucionario 5 de Marzo en el centro de Caracas. El líder del colectivo, Josè Odreman, fue literalmente ejecutado por los poicías como confirman testigos y hasta un video. Odreman tenía también contactos políticos con Serra. La CIPC intentó presentar el caso como una operación en contra de la delicuencia común que supuestamente terminó en un tiroteo. No tuvieron éxito. Varios miembros de la CIPC has sido arrestados y el presidente Maduro anunció una reestructuración fundamental de la policía. El caso demuestra hasta que nivél la administración está contaminada de corrupción, criminalidad y intereses opositores.
Mirando el avance de la organización y construcción popular hay que subrayar el avance masivo del movimiento comunero y de la construcción de comunas, también debido al cambio de fondo en el ministerio de comunas con Reinaldo Iturriza (el cual hace poco pasó a ser ministro de cultura, mientras Elías Jaua asumió las reindas del ministerio de comunas). Y debido principalmente al movimiento comunero mismo que durante los últimos años ha desarrollado un trabajo de base tremendo. Por el otro lado la cuestión del control obrero sigue topandose con un rechazo en casi toda la administración y en casi todas las ramas del gobierno, aunque el discurso oficial sea a favor der control obrero. En el campo chavista hay grandes divergencias en respecto a las políticas económicas y financieras y en relación a como enfrentar la oposició. Las voces críticas han sido atacadas y difamadas de parte de dirigentes del PSUV y del gobierno. Sin embargo eso no ha callado las críticas. Se están formando grupos nuevos, aliazas nuevas y hasta se inscribieron partidos nuevos (William Izarra, teórico marxista y militar bolivariano de vieja data al parecer iscribió una nueva formación) y en el PSUV hay varios grupos y personas que adherieron a Marea Socialista, corriente crítica en el PSUV. Nadie está cuestionando la necesidad de unidad. Se trata más bien de crear y reforzar espacios para posturas críticas y mas a a izquierda.

2. Nueva pelicula documental: "Occupy, Resist, Produce – RiMaflow" by Dario Azzellini and Oliver Ressler, 34 min., 2014
The Maflow plant in Trezzano sul Naviglio, located on the industrial periphery of Milan, was part of the Italian transnational car parts producer Maflow, one of the most important manufacturers of air conditioning tubes worldwide. Far from suffering consequences of the crisis and with enough clients to keep producing, Maflow closed in 2009 following fraudulent bankruptcy. The workers of the plant in Milan, Maflow’s main production facility, began a struggle to reopen the plant and keep their jobs. They occupied the plant and held spectacular protests on the plant’s roof. [...]
“Occupy, Resist, Produce – RiMaflow” follows the workers in their day to day activities and discussions as well as in their political and strategic debates.
The film is the first in a series of short films on occupations of workplaces and production under workers' control in Europe.

A lot of ink has already been spilled on last month’s European elections. Most commentators lament the rise of the far-right; some celebrate the rise of the radical left — but almost everyone has focused their attention on the rearrangement of the deck chairs, missing the grumbling sounds of discontent emanating from below, deep down in the bowels of the ship. As it turns out, only 43% of eligible Europeans actually showed up to vote; the rest couldn’t even be bothered to make the short trip to the polling station. Grand hypotheses are already being staked upon the numbers pulled out of the ballot box, but if numbers still mean anything in this world we should be looking not at the marginal success of leftist parties but at the hundreds of millions who have long since given up their faith in the sham of a democracy we are currently presented with.

Das 2014 erschienene Buch von Sitrin und Azzelini trägt den Titel „They Can´t Represent Us! Reinventing Democracy from Greece to Occupy“. In sieben faszinierenden Kapiteln dreht sich darin alles um demokratische Entscheidungs-findung. Das erste befasst sich mit einer Reihe von Begriffen wie „Horizontalism“ (Horizontalität im Sinne von Hierarchiefreiheit), „Popular Power“, der Souveränität der Menschen, und mit Konzepten wie Autonomie oder Selbstverwaltung. Hier geht es also zunächst um die Selbstermächtigung, die in einer wirklich demokratischen Gesellschaft stattfinden würde, wenn Demokratie bedeutet, dass jeder Mensch gleich ist und selbstbestimmt Leben kann. Im zweiten Kapitel erklären Sitrin und Azzelini dann, warum die liberale repräsentative Demokratie nicht in diesem Sinne ‘demokratisch’ ist.

"El estado comunal: consejos comunales, comunas y la democracia en el lugar de trabajo"

Resumen: El carácter particular de lo que Hugo Chávez llamó como el proceso Bolivariano, radica en la comprensión de que la transformación social se puede construir desde dos direcciones: “desde arriba” y “desde abajo.” El Bolivarianismo –o el Chavismo– incluye entre sus participantes tanto organizaciones tradicionales como nuevos grupos autónomos; éste comprende corrientes basadas en el estado y corrientes anti-sistémicas. El proceso, así difiere de los enfoques tradicionales Leninistas o de los enfoques democráticos sociales, los cuales consideran al estado como el agente central de cambio. Se diferencia también de los enfoques basados en movimientos que conciben ningún papel alguno para un estado en proceso de cambio revolucionario.

Slow Politics - What Europe Needs in the Age of Crisis
International Conference with the participation of Marina Sitrin and Dario Azzellini in Track 1
All of the crises haunting Europe today – be it “Lampedusa” or “NSA-Gate” – indicate one major problem: our governments’ democratic instruments are paralyzed by perpetual turbulence and hence unable to deal properly with the ensuing grievances. What now? It is necessary to reinvent democracy! In this challenging moment citizen movements act as laboratories of the future.
TAKING A BIRD’S EYE POINT OF VIEW
The Slow Politics conference (November 13-15) looks at the plurality of citizen movements as a greater whole and sets out to detect hidden commonalities: Only by connecting the dots does it become possible to create a counterforce to the acceleration of crises. In that sense “slow politics” is our motto for taking a bird’s eye point of view. From this decelerated perspective the conference explores the larger democratic project underlying various grassroots efforts: to empower people as political actors who are able to tackle the uncertainties caused by the manifold crises.

Slow Politics is dealing with these future concerns in five tracks, that is: 1) The Big We, 2) After NSA-Gate, 3) We Are All Migrants, 4) Bitcoin Meets Blue Marble and 5) Publics in Peril. Five parallel workshops take place on the first two days. A limited number of participants can register by contacting the following E-mail bgcon14@supermarkt-berlin.net. The third day, November 15, is open to the general public. Starting at 2 p.m., it offers five panels with prolific speakers including discussions. No registration is required. Admission is free.

Vom Süden lernen? Gesellschaften im und gegen den Sparzwang
Weiterbildungsveranstaltung der Abteilung Politik und Entwicklungsforschung, Institut für Soziologie, JKU Linz
Seit Regierungen und Medien in Europa die Bankenkrise in einem beträchtlichen Teil der öffentlichen Meinung erfolgreich zu einer Staatsschuldenkrise umdeklariert haben, gilt die Devise: gegen die Krise muss gespart werden. Vor allem mit dem Fiskalpakt werden den verschuldeten „Problemstaaten“ an der südlichen Peripherie, aber auch allen anderen EU-Ländern Sparprogramme und sogenannte Strukturanpassungen verordnet. Entlassungen, Einschnitte in Löhne und Pensionen sowie weiterer Sozialabbau sollen das Heilmittel gegen die Krise sein.
Die „Verstaatlichung“ privater Schulden und die Abwälzung der Krise auf einkommensabhängige Bevölkerungsschichten sind aber nichts Neues. Während Lateinamerika heute die Region ist, die nicht im Zentrum der Krise zu stehen scheint, war sie in der internationalen Verschuldungskrise der 1980er Jahre am härtesten betroffen. Die von den internationalen Finanzinstitutionen IWF und Weltbank auferlegte Strukturanpassung und die dadurch zwangsläufige „Zerstörung des Sozialen“ hatten zur Folge, dass die 1980er Jahre in Lateinamerika als „das verlorene Jahrzehnt“ gelten.
Die neoliberalen Strukturanpassungsprogramme waren begleitet von sozialen Aufständen. Inhalte und Aktionsformen des Protestzyklus in Lateinamerika ähnelten stark jenen der sozialen Mobilisierungen, die wir heute in Europa erleben. Die Proteste der bis ins Mark getroffenen Gesellschaften – vor allem an der Peripherie – zeigen, dass die Bevölkerungen bis in die Mittelschichten hinein nicht klaglos bereit sind, die Kosten für die Krise zu tragen.
Wir beschäftigen uns in der Weiterbildungsveranstaltung mit der historischen Krisen - und Verschuldungsdynamik, den offiziellen Krisenbewältigungsstrategien, den dagegen aufflammenden sozialen Protesten und alternativen Auswegen. Dabei wollen wir den „Heimvorteil“ unseres Forschungsschwerpunktes Lateinamerika nutzen und die aktuelle Entwicklung in Europa mit den Erfahrungen in Lateinamerika vergleichen. Denn Lateinamerika war historisch häufig ein Labor für globale Entwicklungen und ist es nun auch bei der Abkehr von neoliberalen Rezepten.
