Dario Azzellini is a professor and researcher in the Department of Development Studies (Unidad Académica en Estudios del Desarrollo) at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (Zacatecas, Mexico) and visiting scholar at the ILR School at Cornell University (Ithaca, USA). He has a PhD in Political Science from the Goethe University (Frankfurt, Germany), and a PhD in Sociology from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Puebla, Mexico). He taught at Cornell University, Montclair State University (Montclair, USA) and Johannes Kepler University (Linz, Austria); and was a visiting fellow at the CUNY Graduate Center (NYC, USA), the CUNY Murphy Institute (NYC, USA) and at the Cornell ILR School (Ithaca, USA). 

His primary research interests are labour studies, local and workers’ self-management, and social movements and protest. He has conducted research into social transformation processes for more than 25 years with a special focus on Latin America and Europe. He has more than 160 academic publications, among them more than 20 books, 11 films, and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters, many of which have been translated into a variety of languages. Among them he authored Vom Protest zum sozialen Prozess: Betriebsbestzungen und Arbeiten in Selbstverwaltung (VSA 2018); Communes and Workers’ Control in Venezuela: Building 21st Century Socialism from Below (Brill 2017) and co-authored They Can’t Represent Us. Reinventing Democracy From Greece to Occupy (Verso 2014). He edited If Not Us, Who? Workers against authoritarianism, fascism and dictatorship (VSA 2021) and An Alternative Labour History: Worker Control and Workplace Democracy (Zed Books 2015); and co-edited The Class Strikes Back. Self-Organised Workers’ Struggles in the Twenty-First Century (Brill 2018); and Ours to Master and to Own: Worker Control from the Commune to the Present (Haymarket 2011). Together with Oliver Ressler he produced Occupy, Resist, Produce, a series of documentaries on recuperated factories under workers control in Europe.
